Growing up in Winona, Katrina had always lived under the same roof as her parents, finding comfort in the familiar surroundings of home. However, as she grew older, like many adults, she developed a strong desire to strike out on her own—a goal that became her focus.
After graduating from Winona Senior High School, Katrina joined the Saehler Drive program at HCO to access support services. (This program is designed to help children and young adults living with their families learn essential daily living skills). Even though she continued living with her parents, Katrina, with guidance from her HCO team, demonstrated significant strides towards independence and honed her social skills. During the COVID pandemic, she temporarily stepped away from HCO, an experience that showed how much she missed interacting with peers her own age.
On February 6, 2024, Katrina turned her long-held dream into reality by moving into a residential home with HCO, embarking on a journey toward greater independence. Like many making their first move away from home, she initially felt nervous and homesick, but she soon settled into her new surroundings. She quickly bonded with her housemates and now cherishes their friendships. Having her own TV and mini fridge in her personal space further strengthened her sense of independence as well.
She has also formed meaningful relationships with the attentive staff who provide unwavering support. From aiding her in gaining independence to small gestures like helping with makeup, hair, and nails, they have added a comforting touch of familiarity to her new environment.
Katrina realizes that being an adult and a valued member of the community also means taking on responsibilities. Today, Katrina finds fulfillment in her job at Steak Shop Catering, where she washes dishes, prepares foods, and helps with catering events. Through this role, she finds great joy and a sense of accomplishment.
HCO has proven to be a perfect fit for Katrina’s journey. She speaks highly of the personalized care and support she receives from the staff. Her ongoing goals include furthering her independence and advancing in her career to increase her financial standing. Katrina’s unwavering confidence and determination serve as an inspiration to those around her. Witnessing her grow as an independent and hardworking individual is truly heartwarming, and we are privileged and delighted to be part of her journey towards living her best life.
