For local student-athletes Dylan, Arthur and Graham, teamwork, encouragement and dedication extend far beyond the playing field. As Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) at Home and Community Options (HCO), they support individuals in pursuing their goals, enjoying their interests and living meaningful lives. Along the way, they have discovered something special: the support they give comes back to them in the most meaningful ways.

Each athlete found their way to HCO through different experiences, but all three have discovered how shared interests, especially sports, can bring people together. Having conversations about football, favorite teams and upcoming games have grown into genuine friendships and connections with those they support at HCO.

Those relationships have led to some unforgettable moments, including individuals traveling to watch the athletes compete.

“It’s electric to have the individuals cheer me on at the games,” Arthur shared. “Talking to them afterwards and seeing their smiles and positivity is my favorite part.”

Dylan remembers an individual traveling to Madison to watch him play football. Graham has experienced the same encouragement at his sporting events and treasures the simple moments, too, like spending 20 minutes tossing a football and talking with someone he supports.

These connections are about so much more than sports. Through their work at HCO, the athletes have strengthened their patience, communication and ability to recognize the needs of others. They have also learned that meaningful relationships often grow from the simplest things: sharing an interest, taking time to listen or showing up when someone matters to you.

At HCO, DSPs support individuals as they explore opportunities, build confidence and pursue their dreams. But as Dylan, Arthur and Graham have experienced, relationships are never one-sided. The individuals they support know their interests, ask about their games, celebrate their accomplishments and proudly cheer them on.

Their story is a wonderful reminder that when we take the time to build relationships, everyone has something to give and something to gain. Sometimes, the most meaningful part of the game isn’t what happens on the field. It’s knowing that someone is in the stands, cheering you on.
