For the past 20 years, Shantel has been supported by Home and Community Options, where she has continued to build skills, pursue her interests, and work toward her goals. A lifelong Winona resident, she attended Winona Senior High School and grew up with her parents and three sisters. Today, family remains an important part of her life, along with her friends, roommates, and support staff.

Working at ORC is an important part of Shantel’s week. Three days a week, she assists with a variety of different jobs and enjoys being part of the team. Her strong sense of routine helps her prepare for each day. Often one of the first people awake in the morning, Shantel starts her day by organizing her room, enjoying breakfast, and getting ready for the day ahead.

One of Shantel’s biggest interests is healthcare, and she hopes to one day have a profession in the healthcare field. She enjoys learning about health-related topics and is always eager to expand her knowledge. To support her in pursuing this interest, staff regularly accompany her to the library, where she checks out books and researches topics related to healthcare. These visits provide opportunities for learning, discussion, and exploration, allowing Shantel to continue building on a subject she is passionate about. Her curiosity and motivation to learn are inspiring, and her support team is proud to encourage her every step of the way.

Outside of work and studying, Shantel enjoys spending time with the people who mean the most to her. She says a perfect day includes listening to music from some of her favorite artists, including Taylor Swift, JoJo Siwa, and the Backstreet Boys. She also enjoys watching movies, bowling, and taking walks in the park. Her favorite movie is Lilo & Stitch, although she also enjoys a good scary movie. Shantel is especially proud of learning how to cook and bake. She enjoys making cookies, cakes, and cupcakes and takes pride in the skills she has developed over time.

Some of her favorite memories include trips to Scooters with staff and roommates, as well as participating in household traditions such as Easter egg hunts and Secret Santa gift exchanges. Looking ahead, Shantel is excited to participate in the Steamboat Days parade with ORC and celebrate her birthday in July with a cake decorated with WWE superstars.

Whether she is spending time with loved ones, learning something new, or working toward her dreams, Shantel approaches life with enthusiasm and determination. With the support of her family, friends, roommates, and staff, Shantel continues to pursue the things that are meaningful to her. Her journey is a reminder that success is not only about reaching a destination, but also about having the opportunity to learn, grow, and follow your dreams along the way.
