Aaron’s story is one of connection, growth, and finding exactly the right place at the right time in life.

He grew up in Hastings, later moving to Cannon Falls to finish school, and then spent many years living in Red Wing. Eventually, he made the decision to move to Winona to be closer to the people who matter most to him, his family. His parents and brother live nearby, and Aaron treasures every opportunity to spend time with them. He shares a special bond with his nieces and nephews, and nothing brings him more joy than spoiling them and being part of their lives.

When he first arrived in Winona, Aaron moved into the Winhaven apartments, where he lived for many years. It was there that he first connected with Home and Community Options, receiving support services that helped him maintain his independence. Staff supported him with everyday tasks like grocery shopping and managing bills, but just as importantly, they built meaningful connections with him, sharing meals, conversations, and moments of companionship.

For a period of time, Aaron explored services with another provider. During that time, his supports looked a little different, with more group-based interactions and less one-on-one time than he was hoping for. As he reflected on what he needed moving forward, he realized he was looking for something more personalized, with consistent daily connection and a stronger sense of support and security.

With thoughtful planning for his future, Aaron made the decision to return to HCO, this time transitioning into a residential home. He knew his needs were changing, and he wanted to ensure he had the right support in place. He also knew something just as important: he didn’t want to feel alone anymore. He was looking for a place where he could feel safe, build relationships, and truly belong.

From the very beginning, it felt right.

During his first tour of his new home, Aaron sat down in a recliner, looked around, and simply said, “I feel like I am home.” In that moment, both he and the staff knew, this was where he was meant to be.

Today, Aaron describes moving into his residential home as the best decision he’s ever made for himself. He loves being part of a home filled with life, laughter, and connection. Whether it’s enjoying bonfires, grilling outside, celebrating holidays with other programs, or simply spending time together, he thrives in the social environment. He has formed strong bonds with his roommates and staff, and he takes pride in being an active and helpful member of the household.

What truly stands out about Aaron is his heart. He is someone who celebrates others wholeheartedly, cheering on his roommates’ accomplishments, making birthdays special, and always finding ways to lift others up. As one staff member shared, “He has the biggest heart,” and it shows in everything he does.

His daily life has changed in many ways, but all for the better. With support from staff, he attends appointments, shops for groceries, and continues to build healthy habits, including exercising more and improving his diet, which is something he’s especially proud of. At the same time, he maintains his independence, with staff supporting him in ways that empower rather than limit him.

Aaron has worked at DAC for many years, where he takes pride in his janitorial work. He’s also taken on new challenges, like learning a new bus route to get to work, another example of his determination and growth.

Looking ahead, Aaron has big goals and dreams. He’s excited about an upcoming summer trip with his girlfriend, one he is especially proud to have paid for himself. He is looking forward to hopefully attending Country Boom this year and dreams of going to a Vikings game someday. He also plans to continue building his cooking skills and staying as healthy as possible to maintain his independence. Above all, he hopes that one day he will get married.

Through every stage of his life, Aaron reflects on his journey with gratitude. He shares that he received the right support at the right time, whether it was support services while living independently or now, residential services as his needs have evolved. Each step has helped guide him to where he is now.

And today, he is proud, proud of his home, his roommates, his staff, and the life he has built. He speaks about them often, always with appreciation and empathy.

Most of all, Aaron has found what he was looking for all along: a place where he feels safe, supported, and truly at home.
