The Grassroots Advocacy Task Force met again in October, with the group being even bigger! The meeting started with reviewing the advocacy movements we talked about at our first meeting, like civil rights, women’s suffrage, and disability rights. These movements showed how people can work together to make life better and fairer for everyone.

The main part of the meeting focused on challenges people are facing today. Many individuals shared that not having meaningful work is frustrating. They want jobs where they feel valued and respected, not just busy or overlooked.

Safety and transportation were also big concerns. Some people talked about how walking in Winona can be unsafe because there aren’t enough crosswalks or sidewalks in some areas. Others said they don’t feel comfortable using the bus because of safety worries or schedules that make it hard to get to work or appointments on time.

Next, the group will start working on the issues that matter most to them. Smaller teams will focus on areas like transportation, employment, and community safety. HCO staff will help support these efforts by connecting individuals with the right people and giving them tools to share their stories.

Each meeting helps build confidence and reminds everyone that their voices matter. By speaking up and working together, this group is showing that real change starts with small steps—and strong voices.
