Ashley’s journey into caregiving wasn’t something she always imagined for herself—but looking back, it seems like it was meant to be.
She grew up in Rochester before moving to Plainview, where she earned her CNA license. Life took another meaningful turn when she met her husband and relocated to Winona. It was there, surrounded by new beginnings, that she heard about Home and Community Options from a friend who worked within the organization. Her friend’s stories spoke of purpose and connection—something that stirred a curiosity in Ashley she couldn’t ignore. Ten years later, Ashley is still with HCO, bringing heart and dedication to the individuals she supports at 174 Edward Street.
While she always had a love for caring for others, working with individuals with disabilities wasn’t a path she initially considered—despite growing up watching her mother provide that very type of care. But as her friend continued to share how fulfilling the work at HCO was, Ashley began to see things differently. She decided to take a leap, and it’s one she hasn’t looked back on. Today, she says she can’t imagine being anywhere else.
Some memories from the past decade stand out—like the time she joined other staff and the individuals they support for a trip to a tractor pull. “It was just so much fun,” she recalls with a smile. But truthfully, there are too many good memories to pick just one. The everyday moments—the laughs, the breakthroughs, the shared joy—are what make her job so meaningful.
Outside of work, Ashley finds peace and happiness in nature. She loves being outdoors, especially when she’s landscaping, fishing, or working with flowers. Her favorite flower is the hibiscus, a vibrant bloom that mirrors her sunny outlook. In the winter, she brings a bit of that brightness inside by caring for indoor plants and succulents.
For Ashley, the heart of her work lies in the smiles of the individuals she supports. Knowing that she’s made even a small difference in their lives brings her a deep sense of fulfillment. Over the years, she’s grown in ways she never expected—especially in patience. “I thought I had patience before,” she admits, “but now I see it in a completely different light.” She also speaks highly of her team, sharing how much she’s learned simply by watching and working alongside others who care just as deeply.
Ashley’s story is one of quiet strength, compassion, and transformation. Through her work, she’s not only changed the lives of others—she’s found a purpose that has changed her own.
