We’re excited to introduce one of the newest members of Home and Community Options’ Board of Directors—a familiar face whose connection to HCO spans many years. Sophi brings warmth, energy, and lived experience to her role on the board, and we’re thrilled to welcome her into this new chapter of involvement with the organization.
After many years of living at home with her family, Sophi was ready for a change. She embraced the opportunity to move into her own apartment at Iverson Court—an HCO apartment building designed to foster independence and connection. Excited to grow and explore life on her own terms, Sophi has found in her new home a place of comfort, support, and pride. With its cozy spaces and close-knit community, Iverson Court has become more than just an apartment—it’s where every day feels meaningful and full of possibility.
Today, she leads a full and active life. She works at the YMCA, where she plays a key role in the kids’ exercise program—particularly proud of her job updating the calendar (something only she knows how to do!). Outside of work, she stays active with a personal trainer, enjoying walks, biking, and gym time. She also makes room for the things she loves: ice skating in the winter, relaxing with movies, spending time with friends and family, and enjoying time outside whenever the sun is shining.
Her recent invitation to join the HCO Board came as an unexpected but exciting surprise. While visiting her mom, she received a call from a current board member, asking if she’d be interested in joining. She took some time to consider it—and ultimately said yes. Her first meeting confirmed she made the right choice. She was welcomed with kindness, and says everyone on the board made her feel valued right away.
Joining the board has given her a deeper connection to the organization she already knew and loved. She describes her fellow board members as friendly, compassionate, and committed—qualities that mirror everything HCO stands for.
As she steps into this new role, Sophi also shares her deep appreciation for the support she’s received through the years. “Without the staff at HCO,” she says, “I honestly don’t know where I’d be today.” Executive Director Suzanne Horstman shared, “Home and Community Options is fortunate to have Sophi serving on our Board of Directors. She is a strong self-advocate who brings a valuable and deeply personal perspective to our work. Sophi is engaged, curious, and thoughtful—she asks insightful questions and consistently advocates not only for herself, but for others receiving services as well. Her voice is an important part of our board, and we’re grateful for her contributions.”
