What color are you? It might sound like a simple question, but during HCO’s recent Summer Leadership Training, it sparked meaningful conversations, plenty of laughter, and a new way of understanding one another.
This July, HCO’s full-time staff and members of our Board of Directors gathered for an interactive morning focused on communication, teamwork, and leadership. Jennifer May from Star Services led the training, guiding staff through activities that encouraged conversation, reflection, and a fresh perspective on working together. From thought-provoking discussions with coworkers to lessons on how our actions can positively influence a team, the morning challenged everyone to think differently about the relationships that make HCO successful.
The highlight of the training was discovering our True Colors.
Using the True Colors personality assessment, everyone completed a short quiz to identify the personality style that best described them. Participants were then divided into four color groups, each representing a unique way of thinking, communicating, and approaching challenges.
- Orange personalities value freedom, action, and adaptability.
- Gold personalities thrive on organization, responsibility, and structure.
- Blue personalities are driven by relationships, empathy, and connection.
- Green personalities enjoy problem-solving, innovation, and strategic thinking.
It was fascinating to see where everyone landed. While many coworkers weren’t surprised by their results, others found themselves learning something new about the way they naturally communicate and solve problems.
To put each personality style into action, every group was given the same challenge: plan a family reunion while staying within a set budget. Although the assignment was identical, the approaches couldn’t have been more different.
Some groups carefully mapped out every expense, making sure each dollar was accounted for. Others focused first on creating meaningful experiences and activities that everyone would enjoy. Some jumped right into brainstorming ideas, while others took time to organize a plan before making decisions. Watching each group naturally lean into its strengths made the True Colors concepts come to life. There wasn’t one “right” approach—each group’s different perspective demonstrated how unique strengths can all lead to success.
The activity was a powerful reminder that every team is made up of people who think, communicate, and problem-solve differently. By understanding those differences, we can better appreciate one another, communicate more effectively, and build even stronger relationships with our coworkers.
Everyone left the training with a greater understanding of themselves, a deeper appreciation for the strengths of those around them, and practical tools they can carry into their work every day. Thank you to Jennifer May from Star Services for sharing your knowledge and helping make the morning both engaging and impactful.
