A shared love for volunteering at the Humane Society brought together Mike and Molly, whose connection grew from their mutual passion for helping animals.
Before receiving services from Home and Community Options, Mike lived with his sister, and later with foster parents. About 20 years ago, he moved into his first home with HCO, where he lived until 2023. He has since transitioned to a new home within the agency, where he continues to live a full and active life. Outside of his job at the Elks Club, Mike enjoys mowing the lawn, going for walks, playing slots and bingo on his iPad, and watching game shows on TV. When reflecting on his time with HCO, Mike shared that one of the most meaningful parts of his experience has been the friendships he’s built.
Molly joined HCO in August of 2024. In May, she began her internship at Mike’s home. Originally from out of town, Molly came to Winona to attend Winona State University, where she is pursuing her degree while volunteering on campus and working in tutoring services. Outside of school and work, she enjoys exercising and spending time with her family. Although Molly already had experience working with individuals with disabilities, she says her time at HCO has given her a deeper understanding and appreciation for people with physical and intellectual challenges.
When Molly began her internship, she and Mike quickly bonded over their shared enjoyment of game shows. Their friendship grew even stronger when they discovered they both loved cats. Knowing Mike’s interest, Molly, who had already been volunteering at the Humane Society, invited him to join her. He eagerly accepted, and the two went on to volunteer together every Tuesday and Thursday.
During their time at the Humane Society, Mike and Molly enjoyed spending time with the cats by petting, brushing, and playing with them. Mike especially loved spending time with the kittens, and one of his favorite memories was of two cats who spent the entire visit chasing a ball he tossed for them. For Molly, the best moments came when she sat on the floor and cuddled with the cats. One cat, in particular, held a special place in her heart, especially after it had recently undergone dental surgery.
Since then, Molly’s internship has come to an end, but Mike and Molly continue to volunteer together at the Humane Society. They still try to attend at least once or twice a week, working around Molly’s school schedule. This experience has truly improved Mike’s outlook on life, and it has become a wonderful bond the two have created for themselves.
Both Mike and Molly agree that the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing the cats find loving homes. They encourage others to get involved as well. As Mike put it, “Others deserve to feel as happy helping the animals as I do.” Molly added that there were opportunities for everyone, whether you were a cat lover or preferred walking the dogs.
Through their shared experiences, Mike and Molly not only make a difference in the lives of animals but have also built a meaningful friendship along the way.
Mike and Molly, thank you for the impact you’ve made, both at the Humane Society and within Home and Community Options.
