In October, Home and Community Options held an informative Voting Workshop, aimed at empowering individuals with essential knowledge about their rights and responsibilities as voters in Minnesota.
Participants learned about key voter rights, including:
– The right to take time off work to vote.
– The ability to register on election day.
– The right to seek assistance when needed.
– Voting rights for individuals under guardianship, unless a judge has revoked that right.
– The freedom to cast a vote without external influence.
During the workshop, information on AutoMARK, a ballot marking machine designed to assist voters, was also shared. Guidance was provided on how to register and what this year’s ballot looked like. Paula and Ed Krage shared helpful information about their roles as poll workers, what to expect when arriving at a polling location, and how they assist voters. We appreciate their hard work and service in making the election process run smoothly.
A significant portion of the workshop focused on real-life scenarios, allowing participants to discuss strategies for navigating potential challenges at the polls. Topics included how to respond if a poll worker mistakenly denies their right to vote, handling discourteous individuals, and understanding what to do if they have questions. Individuals may bring someone along for support if needed, whether for assistance in understanding the ballot or navigating the voting process.
It’s crucial to emphasize that every individual has the right to make their own voting choices. No one should pressure anyone to vote for a candidate or issue against their will.
Having access to credible, non-partisan information about candidates is vital to informed decision-making. With the right tools and resources, everyone can feel confident in their ability to participate in the voting process and ensure their voice is heard. Together, we can make every vote count
