HCO’s Grassroots Advocacy Task Force met on April 17, 2025, to continue our important work in speaking up for the people we support.
We began by talking about Disability Services Day at the Capitol. Many shared what they enjoyed most — especially being part of the exciting rally and feeling the energy of so many people coming together for a common cause. We also discussed some challenges, including a few accessibility issues within the Minnesota State Capitol. Everyone shared ideas on how we can make the day even better and more welcoming in the future.
Next, we reviewed the latest updates on the bills we are following closely. Currently, there are several state and federal changes that could have a significant negative impact on individuals with developmental disabilities. We also talked about what an “omnibus” bill is, along with its potential disadvantages. As part of our discussion, we looked at where we are in the process of “How a Bill Becomes a Law” and what steps still need to happen.
During the meeting, we watched a short ARRM (Association of Residential Resources in Minnesota) video highlighting Disability Services Day at the Capitol. We also viewed powerful testimony from ARRM and other providers, reminding us just how important our advocacy efforts are.
We reviewed how to submit an Action Alert — a quick and easy way to tell lawmakers where we stand. We also talked about why it’s important to write letters to members of the Conference Committees once they are formed, so our voices continue to be heard.
We also discussed communication tips for writing Letters to the Editor and posting on social media. We emphasized the importance of working together and reviewing messages to make sure every message we share is accurate, respectful, clear, and current. This helps ensure our advocacy is strong and effective.
Thank you to everyone who is part of our grassroots advocacy efforts. Your voice truly makes a difference!
