Erik Klingman was raised in Marathon, New York, where he lived until the summer of 1992. He then moved with his family to various places, including Virginia and North Carolina, before settling in Winona in 2005—a place he has proudly called home ever since.
Erik is married to his wife, Jesse, and together they share their home with two cats—Perseus Maximus Pantalones and Waffles Jameson Winchester. Outside of work, Erik enjoys a wide range of hobbies and creative interests. He loves spending time outdoors canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, gardening, and occasionally fishing. On the creative side, Erik is passionate about art, particularly painting. He also builds custom frames for artwork and is a skilled photographer—his work has even been published, with three of his photos featured in print.
Erik first learned about Home and Community Options (HCO) through a neighbor who worked full-time for the agency. After finishing a previous job, that same neighbor encouraged him to apply. Erik began working at HCO in 2014, initially covering overnight shifts twice a week. In 2016, he moved into a full-time Program Assistant role at a new program. He also spent several months working at various locations before accepting a new full-time Program Assistant position at the 142 program in April 2021, where he continues to work today.
Looking back on his early days at HCO, Erik remembers being struck by how different the environment was compared to previous workplaces. He appreciated the variety in each day and the dynamic, fast-paced nature of the job. Over time, he’s come to value many aspects of his work—from helping individuals connect with their community, to building meaningful friendships with coworkers. One of the greatest benefits, he says, is the flexibility in his schedule, which supports a healthy work-life balance.
For Erik, the most rewarding part of the job has been the personal growth he’s experienced, especially in communication and life skills. Through trainings, classes, and day-to-day interactions with coworkers and the people he supports, he continues to develop and strengthen these abilities. Of all the jobs he’s had—or could have—Erik feels none have offered the same sense of fulfillment as his role at HCO.
When it comes to thriving at HCO, Erik believes that certain qualities go a long way: a willingness to help, patience, strong social skills, and a love for being active in the community. At the same time, he emphasizes that many valuable skills—like cooking, event planning, organizing activities, and navigating interpersonal dynamics—can be learned on the job. His advice to new team members? Avoid power struggles, keep an open mind, and always be patient.
Thank you, Erik, for all of your hard work over the years. HCO is very lucky to have you!
