Theater has a unique ability to transport us to magical worlds where anything is possible—where a beast can turn into a prince, children and nannies can fly, and dreams come to life on stage. Since 1998, Home and Community Options (HCO) has brought that magic to the Winona community through its annual summer musical, a production that became much more than just a fundraiser. It was a testament to HCO’s mission of true integration, where individuals of all abilities came together to create something extraordinary.
For over two decades, HCO’s summer musicals provided an opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities to shine on stage alongside community members, growing in confidence, skill, and self-expression. What began with only a handful of individuals with disabilities participating in early productions grew into a fully inclusive experience, with a multitude of individuals performing in later years. The impact extended beyond the cast—it resonated with the musicians, volunteers, and audience members who became part of a larger story of inclusion and community.
Each summer, a new production brought excitement and fresh opportunities for personal growth. The journey began in 1998 with Oliver! and continued with beloved classics such as The Wizard of Oz (1999, 2008), Annie (2002), Beauty and the Beast (2009), and Mary Poppins (2015). The final production, My Fair Lady, took the stage in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the musical’s 22-year run to a close.
Beyond the performances themselves, the summer musical became a vehicle for building lifelong relationships. Many cast members returned year after year—not just for the love of theater, but for the joy of being part of a truly inclusive experience.
HCO’s summer musical was more than just entertainment; it was a movement that changed perceptions, fostered friendships, and exemplified the power of community. It demonstrated that when given the chance, individuals of all abilities can create something truly magical. And while the curtain may have closed on this chapter, its impact continues to shine brightly in the lives it touched and the hearts it transformed.
While the summer musical is now a cherished part of HCO’s history, the spirit it inspired continues to thrive. The individuals we support haven’t stopped performing—they’ve simply found new stages. Today, they share their love of music and theater in authentically integrated ways: singing in their church choirs, enjoying karaoke at their favorite local spots, joining community theater ensembles, and performing with pride in spaces where they are seen not for their disabilities, but for their talents and passion. These opportunities aren’t just recreational—they are powerful expressions of belonging, friendship, and purpose.
The legacy of HCO’s summer musicals lives on through these everyday moments of joy, creativity, and connection. Those we serve aren’t just participating—they are fully engaged members of their community, using their voices and talents to connect with others, challenge perceptions, and continue creating magic in ways both big and small.
