Leadership Training

HCO’s dedicated full-time staff recently carved out time from their busy schedules to come together for a morning of networking and group training.  In an era dominated by Zoom and online interactions, the opportunity to gather in person was especially valued.  This summer’s session, held on July 16th, brought together members of our staff and Board of Directors.

The session began with a presentation by Nicole Weydt, our Director of Health Services, on “The Power of Elevation.” Elevation occurs when we witness morally courageous or heroic acts. It not only makes us feel good but also has significant real-world impacts, encouraging moral behavior and inspiring us to emulate it. When we see someone doing something good, it motivates us to follow their example.

Following Nicole, Joe Schmit, an award-winning broadcaster and community leader, delivered a keynote on “Silent Impact.” Drawing from his extensive experience at KSTP-TV since 1985 and his accolades in broadcasting and community service, Joe emphasized the impact we can make through purpose, persistence, and passion.

He underscored the significance of small, positive actions each day, that will make an impact on others and shared that “we make our biggest impressions when we are not trying to be impressive.”  Joe highlighted the importance of aligning our actions with our values and putting our whole heart into our endeavors. He reaffirmed the principle of integrity—doing what’s right even when no one is watching. He noted that true leadership lies in positive reinforcement and urged us to respond positively to challenges, dare to be different (be fearless!), and to get rid of negativity.

Looking forward, he posed a thought-provoking question: What are we doing to prepare to be better? He encouraged us to adopt an impact resolution—focusing on one core value or trait each month to cultivate improvement. He reminded us of the cumulative effect of making one more impact each day.

These concepts directly parallel the work HCO is doing through its Living with Purpose program, allowing our leadership staff to understand the power of making a “silent impact” through serving others.

We are thankful to have had the opportunity to welcome new team members, deepen connections, and immerse ourselves in an important topic that promises lasting impacts on our agency and community for years to come.
